Reminiscent of Bernard Malamud and Cynthia Ozick, Levine’s staggeringly beautiful, witty stories were largely overlooked during his lifetime. These thinly-veiled autobiographical pieces explore the lives of poor writers and painters in England, young airmen during WWII, and immigrants in the Jewish community of prewar Ottawa.

Norman Levine (19232005) was the author of eight short story collections, two novels, and a memoir, among other works.
